Dear friends, how can we distinguish between the water seal and the oil seal of a pump? What are their respective functions?
The oil seal or water seal is located on the outer edge of the end caps at both ends of the bearing housing, and is fixed to the rotating shaft with screws, rotating in sync with the shaft. The oil baffle serves to prevent lubricating oil from splashing out; it uses the centrifugal force generated by rotation to send the oil back in the direction of oil return, so it should be angled toward that direction, that is, designed with a conical surface where the larger end faces the oil return side. In addition to this function, the water shield also serves to prevent the cooling water used for end-face sealing from entering the bearing housing. When the oil seal or water seal becomes loose, it should not be taken lightly; instead, more maintenance efforts should be exerted. If the oil seal and water seal completely come loose from the bearing cover, they should be tightened before starting the machine. Because once the oil (water) seal ring loosens, it can no longer serve to seal the bearing housing; the lubricating oil inside the housing leaks out along the shaft, causing the oil level to drop. With less oil in the housing, it is easier for the bearings to overheat. If the oil (water) seal falls onto the opposite gear or the segment seal cover, continuous impact will generate sparks; and in the presence of leaking hot oil or flammable gases, this can lead to a fire. Therefore, if the oil (water) seal becomes loose or falls off, the pump should be stopped immediately for repair.
