In physics, the mass of a certain substance per unit volume is called the density of that substance. The symbol for density is ρ (read as rōu). The international unit of density is kilogram per cubic meter; other common units include gram per cubic centimeter. Its mathematical expression is ρ = m/V. In the International System of Units, the unit of mass is the kilogram and the unit of volume is the cubic meter; therefore, the mass of 1 cubic meter of a substance is taken as its density. For non-uniform substances, this value is referred to as the “average density”.
