Our company plans to install an ammonia synthesis system, with the production process involving coal water slurry gasification, isothermal shift reaction, low-temperature methanol washing and liquid nitrogen washing, as well as the Cassali ammonia synthesis process. The wastewater treatment plant is intended to handle the black water generated during gasification. After consulting with the design institute, they suggested using a “double A/O” process for treatment; however, this approach requires a large amount of space and has poor resistance to shock loads. What process should be used for wastewater treatment, and what should be the quality standards for the treated water?

The main issue with your process wastewater is the high level of ammonia nitrogen; therefore, the preferred treatment method is one that involves nitrification and denitrification. The design team’s recommendation makes sense. Of course, you are also aware of the limitations of this approach. It depends on the actual test results and what requirements exist regarding the quality of the treated water.
Our company uses modified fiber ball filters, which can effectively treat gasification black liquor; the resulting wastewater can be directly fed into biological treatment processes. We can provide more details if needed.
The preliminary treatment beforehand can remove the oil, after which the process proceeds to the biochemical stage; this improves the effectiveness of the biochemical treatment. Otherwise, a high oil content affects its efficiency.
