The installation of reducer pipes and which devices require one in operation and one as backup

I’m a beginner in process design and would like to ask: 1. Is it necessary to use reducers at every place where the diameter changes? What are the principles for installing reducers? 2. In the process design, in which areas is it necessary to apply the ‘one in use and one as backup’ principle for equipment?
This post was last edited by goldliyang on 2016-9-23 at 15:07. In process piping, there is the issue of pipe diameter changes; when a pipe needs to have its diameter altered, an elbow is used to achieve that. If 273 becomes 426, it can be achieved with just a reducing fitting.
