The salary is fixed: 3100 yuan before taxes during the two-month trial period, with an additional 900 yuan based on performance after the trial period ends. A bonus is given at the end of the year, calculated after taking performance factors into account. I have a master’s degree in chemical engineering from Tianjin University; I have been working for three years and have little project experience. Most of the time I learn on my own (the number of posts I make on forums shows just how much I still need to learn*). My first job was at a medium-sized design institute owned by a central state enterprise, and my second job was at a branch of another chemical-related institute. When they first graduated, fresh graduates earned a salary of over 5,000, with a bonus in the second year. At the beginning of 2016, I received an offer from a design institute affiliated with a central state-owned enterprise (as part of a process in which a chemical and civil engineering group acquired a smaller design firm). The salary was 4,600 yuan plus bonuses; I thought it was too low so I declined the offer. The management at the design institute said they were satisfied with me, but gave me such a low salary, claiming that it was standard practice. PS: Anyway, I feel insulted right now. Regarding my mentioning Tian Da University, it’s not because I think I’m that great, as some colleagues claim; on the contrary, I really hate it when people at work say I graduated from Tian Da University. I believe that having strong project skills is far more important than anything else. I emphasize this just to make it clear that the salary offered makes me feel ashamed on behalf of my school. Everyone can probably understand when money becomes a source of shame. President Wen once said that one should live with dignity, and I feel that such a low salary prevents one from living with dignity. The salary during the probation period is 3100 yuan, and after deducting social insurance and other fees, I’d get around 2600 yuan net. Expenses for food and accommodation amount to 1600 yuan, leaving me with 1000 yuan to save each month. Living like this in Nanjing must be very stressful every day. I’m not pretending – my previous jobs all offered a basic salary of over 5500 yuan, with higher amounts if there were bonuses. It’s a huge contrast. My goal now is to find a job at a large design firm in Nanjing or at a foreign-funded enterprise in an industrial park. For such companies, I’m willing to start from the bottom and accept a salary of 4000 yuan per month, because at least I can learn something there, and I believe I’ll be able to earn a higher salary in such companies in the future. As for that company in Nanjing… well, it seems unlikely
