There is one horizontal tank, which is large in size and weight; the ratio of its length to diameter is greater than 8. During manufacturing, depression occurred at the two end supports, with a depth of about half the wall thickness, resulting in local thinning of the walls. Inward indentation and thinning are present around the entire 360 degrees of the circumference. Due to confidentiality reasons, it’s not convenient to include images. How should this situation be remedied?
There are essentially two remedial methods: one is to use jacks or similar devices to prop up and repair the depressed area; of course, this method has a certain impact on the properties of the material, so a comprehensive evaluation is necessary. Another method is to replace the steel plate in the depressed area.
But there is also the issue of local thinning. Can such large-scale thinning over an entire circumference (360 degrees in the circumferential direction and about 150 mm in the axial direction) be addressed through surfacing?
Simply using surfacing generally leads to further inward deformation, which is unacceptable to both the inspection party and the owner. If the owner is still unaware of this issue, it is best to use internal bracing to push it out; if the container material is hot-rolled carbon steel or low-alloy steel sheets, flame heating can be used as an aid. If this method cannot fix it, the tube section should be replaced.
How can there be such localized thinning...
The design is unreasonable; the only solution is to add reinforcing rings at the pivot points.
