It is primarily determined by two factors: the balance of oxygen levels and the minimum reliable operation of the burner. Generally, air separation plant designs are based on full load operation; that is, there is little margin for high-pressure oxygen, and some even have no such margin at all. The burner designed in this way also has a maximum amount of coal slurry that can be fed and a specific pressure difference for the burner; generally, at half load the pressure difference across the burner is already quite low. Reducing the load further can lead to excessive oxygen levels due to poor atomization of the coal slurry, which may even result in flameout and pose a danger. Therefore, this node is selected for furnace inversion. If you have an ample supply of oxygen, then you can switch to it at a slightly higher load, as long as the overall gas flow system can handle it. For example, the furnace can be switched over at 60% or 70% load. It becomes difficult at higher levels, because your subsequent systems don’t have such great capacity.
