It is therefore an important structural material for nuclear reactors. Zirconium and its alloys are unique in terms of their corrosion resistance in alkali solutions of various concentrations as well as in molten alkalis; their performance is even better than that of tantalum. The series of zirconium-based valves developed in China are widely used in the chlor-alkali industry, soda ash industry, pharmaceutical industry, fertilizer industry, fine chemical industry, textile fiber synthesis and dyeing industries, as well as in the production of basic organic acids and inorganic salts, and in the nitric acid industry.
