I am the founder of a new customer contact center based in Las Vegas. That being said, as a former employee, I am in a unique position to offer advice for those job seekers who are looking for a new job while still employed. Despite all these achievements, I decided to leave my current role in order to take on the position of CEO at a larger company in the same industry, with the aim of finding other opportunities and, above all, creating my own path and building a legacy that is uniquely mine. Fortunately, I showed the management group that I was moving forward, and I gave them a 90-day notice, which was useful for both them and me. In other words, as a former employee, I am in a unique position to offer advice to those who are still employed but looking for new jobs. My first piece of advice is to be gentle with yourself. If you’re the type of person who feels guilty or dishonest about looking for another opportunity, remember that you’re actually doing nothing wrong. You’re most likely not under a contract, which means you’re an at-will employee. In most states, you can be fired for almost no reason at any time, but this also works in your favor because you can quit for any reason or no reason at all. I would say that the bigger mistake is failing to seek other opportunities if you’re not emotionally, intellectually, or financially satisfied. My first piece of advice is to relax. If you think seeking new opportunities is unloyal or dishonest, then you need to realize that there is nothing wrong with it in fact. It is very likely that you will not be bound by a contract, which means your employment relationship can be terminated at any time. In most states, you can be fired at any time with almost no reason, but this works in your favor as well, because you can resign for any reason or even without any reason. I think the bigger mistake is that you aren’t fulfilled emotionally, intellectually, or financially, yet you don’t seek other opportunities. I would follow that advice by suggesting you take a detailed and organized approach to your search. Although it may initially seem simple and like a luxury to look for a job while you already have a steady paycheck, many employed applicants report finding it very difficult to look for new work because they must still attend meetings, complete their regular tasks, answer phone calls, and deal with last-minute requests from time to time. I recommend setting aside at least one or two hours each day for this purpose – this could be in the morning before work starts, towards the end of the day when things slow down, or even during your lunch break. Choose a time that fits within your usual schedule and allows you some peace and quiet to focus. I suggest adopting a detailed and organized method for your search. Although it seems simple at first, looking for a job when one has a stable income appears to be a luxury. Many employees report that it is difficult to find a new job because they have to attend meetings, complete daily tasks, answer phone calls, and handle urgent requests. I suggest setting aside one to two hours each day, either in the morning before going to work, before fully diving into work, when you’re relaxing at the end of the day, or even during lunch break. Choose a time slot according to your usual schedule to calm yourself down and focus. Next, I recommend that you avoid cutting off any connections, either directly or indirectly. By direct means, I mean you should think twice before telling your current boss or colleagues exactly where they can put that three-page analysis that is due by the end of the week. Examples of indirect ways of doing this include simply ignoring requests for help with a task from a colleague, or being rude or dismissive toward your boss when you know you’re about to leave the company. It’s important to maintain good relationships with others because you never know when you might need their support in the form of references or recommendations. Since many employers are reluctant to provide detailed references due to potential legal issues, smart companies ask for references from colleagues in order to determine whether you’re a good team player and whether you’d fit well within their company culture. As a next step, I suggest that you don’t cut off any connections, either directly or indirectly. The current boss and colleagues are busy working on the three-page analysis report that needs to be completed this week, which means you might need to think carefully before telling them. Examples of indirect self-blockade might include simply ignoring requests for help from colleagues, or treating one’s boss with indifference and contempt in order to find alternative ways to proceed. It is important to maintain good relationships, because you never know when you might need reference letters or recommendations from these team members. Since many employers are reluctant to ask for detailed references due to potential responsibilities, savvy companies will ask for letters of recommendation from your colleagues in order to assess whether you are a good partner and can adapt to their culture. Finally, once you have landed that new job and given notice, I suggest you go out in style. Maybe you buy lunch for your team or just email them a simple and heartfelt thank you. If you have a good relationship with your boss, it will be memorable if you thank her for the opportunity and the lessons you have learned along the way. And if you don’t have a good relationship? A simple “There have been challenges along the way, but I am grateful for the experience and the lessons learned.” This is neither a criticism nor a compliment, but it shows grace and professionalism in every way. Lastly, once you find a new job and receive confirmation, I suggest you handle things properly from then on. Perhaps you buy lunch for the team members or simply send them a simple but sincere thank-you email. If you have a good relationship with your boss, then thanking her for the opportunities she has given you as well as for the lessons you have learned along the way will be something she will not easily forget. What if the relationship isn’t good? A simple statement: “The road ahead is full of challenges; thanks for the experiences and lessons I’ve learned.” ”It is neither sarcasm nor praise, but it demonstrates elegance and professionalism in every aspect.
