Our company has a 10-cubic-meter liquid ammonia storage tank, which is considered a pressure vessel. Previously, it was placed outdoors, with a shade canopy built over the tank; however, experts said that this arrangement was unsafe, as a leak could result in a large affected area. They recommended storing it inside a tank room ； Following the advice of experts, our company made adjustments by removing the shading canopy and constructing a separate building for storing the liquid ammonia tanks. This building is equipped with exhaust fans and ventilation windows. However, experts who came to inspect it said that this approach was not standard; in the event of an ammonia leak, it could lead to excessively high concentrations of ammonia in that area, thereby increasing the risk. Each expert has a different opinion – so what exactly should we do? Seeking advice from experts
Just follow whatever the expert recommends; there’s no other way
There should be no problem with storing liquid ammonia in the open air, right? Previously, the ammonia tanks at my company were outdoors
It is not allowed to prevent placement indoors or outdoors; a shed can be used, but this is problematic in the north due to low outdoor temperatures, as liquid ammonia does not vaporize, and it is difficult to provide heating outdoors!
Storing liquid ammonia outdoors should be fine, but a dike and sprinkler system need to be installed
Liquid ammonia storage tanks should be placed in a well-ventilated area; they must not be kept indoors. They can be located outdoors, and it is advisable to install fire suppression systems there. Our storage tanks are arranged in this way

The unit is a 5,000 m3 liquid ammonia sphere tank; to maintain the pressure and temperature inside the tank, a refrigeration system is required to recover the evaporated ammonia. A liquid ammonia pump is needed to apply pressure when delivering ammonia. It is expensive and is generally used in large-scale chemical plants. Small enterprises that store products in horizontal tanks should install sun protection measures, cooling water spray systems for temperature reduction, or have adequate insulation to prevent heat loss.
