To my colleagues in the northern region who work with instrumentation: how do you handle insulation and heating for standalone instruments, such as pressure transducers installed directly on pipelines? We have a project in Liaoning where the minimum temperature drops to over -30 degrees. It’s not convenient to use insulation boxes for instruments on the main roads; is there any simple way to achieve the same result? I’m from the south; I’m not familiar with winters in the north!
The instruments and pipelines are bundled together in a common enclosure, with the heat from the pipelines used to heat the instruments.
Self-regulating temperature electric heating tape to meet your needs
I had been using ordinary self-regulating heating tapes to protect the pressure tapping pipes in the steam system; the problem was that these tapes would burn out at 445°C whenever the instruments were flushed. This year, I switched to a two-layer insulation system with a heating tape placed between the two layers, and the result has been very good.
It is best to have two layers of insulation, with a self-regulating heating element in between. If direct heating is used, after the waste has been discharged, the high temperature of the medium can easily damage the heating element. Our company has experienced accidents involving short circuits in the heating strips.
Add an isolation tank, or use the process piping for heat tracing (in this case, pressure gauges are often used).
