Currently, the antifreeze used in cars on the market is, for the most part, of the ethylene glycol type, that is, ethylene glycol is used as the antifreeze agent. Antifreeze is a liquid with a temperature below freezing point that does not freeze at certain low temperatures; it also has good fluidity, allowing it to carry away excess heat from the engine just like water. Therefore, the proper selection of antifreeze is the first step in the production and research of antifreeze fluids. Antifreezes available on the market include concentrated salt solutions, methanol, ethanol, glycerin, propylene glycol, isopropanol, dimethyl sulfoxide, and others. Concentrated salt solutions can severely corrode water tanks, and they have been phased out. Methanol and ethanol are volatile with low boiling points, which makes it difficult for antifreeze to maintain its freezing point over time. Glycerin has a high density, high viscosity, and poor fluidity, which affects the circulation of the antifreeze and results in reduced cooling efficiency of the engine. Isopropyl alcohol is expensive and highly toxic ; Propylene glycol has good biodegradability, as well as excellent resistance to cavitation heat transfer and corrosion in cast aluminum, but it is relatively expensive ; Dimethyl sulfoxide is suitable for polar antifreeze properties, but it has poor compatibility with rubber.
