Since I have nothing to do, I’ll share my experiences and feelings about working shifts. In the early days, the shift system in the factory was four shifts per week: three early shifts of 7 hours each, three evening shifts of 8 hours each, and three day shifts of 9 hours each; a shift change took place every three days, with a day off after completing three early shifts. The assistant supervisor is usually assigned tasks such as cleaning, equipment maintenance, and training. It feels more relaxed this way. It was a single-day weekend back then; now with two days off per week, it’s even more relaxed. Later, it was said that shifts lasted 12 hours, with buses providing transportation to and from work. I’ve been through the initial stages of building several companies, during which there were three shifts back to back with no days off, though some had rotating rest days. But it seems that working continuously for more than eight hours does pose a risk to safe production, and moreover, the duration of shift work should not be too long. Generally, people between 45 and 50 years old are no longer suitable for shift work, as they often experience a sub-healthy state.

When I was in school, I worked at Qilu Petrochemical; there, they operated on a five-shift system with three shifts per day, so as to ensure that employees had enough time to rest and regain their energy. After starting work, the workshop operated on a four-shift, three-shift rotation system. However, when the production lines at Jianda were set up, many people had to work on a four-shift, two-shift rotation system. One reason was that the factory was located far from the city, resulting in long commute times by shuttle bus; another reason was that those working on rotating shifts had a lot of free time. After carefully considering everyone’s opinions, the decision was made to adopt a four-shift, two-shift rotation system. These days, many young people are different from older employees; they don’t take a break for an afternoon when working night shifts. For them, time passes quickly while they’re using their phones, and some even have side jobs, which means they lack enthusiasm at work, posing significant safety risks. Last year, there was a case of sudden cardiac death at night in the factory... The scheduling of shifts has to follow the opinions of the factory management and the majority of employees... The process materials used in the factory are flammable, explosive, and highly toxic.

Shift 4 operates on a 2-shift system, with each shift lasting 12 hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.; one works 2 day shifts followed by 2 night shifts, after which there is a 4-day break； Personally, I think the most user-friendly scheduling approach is one that provides 4 days of vacation, offering sufficient time for rest and leisure; meanwhile, the continuous working periods ensure that one can maintain good form during work, thus allowing a balance between work and life.
