1 Function of the steam trap: The main function of a steam trap is to remove condensate water and non-condensable gases from the steam system, thereby improving the heat exchange efficiency of the steam. 2. Drain valve leakage: Firstly, the drain valve is the only outlet in the steam system. A properly functioning drain valve should open its outlet when condensate and non-condensable gases enter the valve body, and close it when steam enters the valve body. However, frequent opening and closing over a long period of time causes wear on the valve disc and seat, preventing the outlet from being fully closed when steam enters the valve body, resulting in steam leakage. Therefore, a check valve leak will not affect the drainage of condensate, but it will cause steam loss. 3. The drain valve is not functioning properly. Proper operation of a drain valve involves periodic opening and closing of the outlet. Common problems related to its improper functioning fall into two categories: First, the outlet becomes blocked, usually due to impurities in the steam. The solution is to disassemble and clean the valve components or replace them, as well as installing a filter in front of the drain valve. Secondly, there is retention of condensate water, meaning that the interior of the steam trap as well as its inlet side are filled with condensate water, and the discharge outlet remains open to allow continuous drainage. The main causes of this are insufficient pressure at the steam inlet or excessive backpressure, which prevents the establishment of the minimum pressure difference required for the proper operation of the steam trap (in other words, the inlet pressure is not sufficient to force all the condensate water into the valve body; when steam cannot reach the valve body, the discharge outlet stays open to allow drainage). The solution is to increase the pressure at the front end or eliminate the backpressure (by installing a condensate recovery pump). If the wrong model is chosen and the flow rate does not meet the requirements, this can also lead to the accumulation of condensate. Furthermore, when installing steam traps, a separate condensate drainage design must be adhered to; a parallel condensate drainage design will also cause condensate to accumulate in some branches.
