No. For the West-to-East Gas Pipeline, submarine pipelines – pipelines that are several kilometers or even dozens of kilometers long – how many flanges are needed? How many additional potential leakage points?

In terms of the manufacturing process, for long-distance pipelines, even valves are welded together; in process equipment, flanges are required in many places – for example, detachable splices are needed at the equipment connections. Of course, flanges are all potential leakage points. Those with a diameter of less than 1.5 inches are usually welded, so there’s no need to worry about flanges. For larger diameters, flanges are added as needed; flanges, bolts, and gaskets all cost money.

Based on the production process and maintenance requirements, flanges can be considered to facilitate maintenance, replacement, and swapping. If there are no special requirements, it is not necessary to add one; after all, adding a flange means creating an additional point of leakage.
