Gate valve: Advantages 1. Low flow resistance. The medium flow channel inside the valve body is straight, allowing the medium to flow in a linear path with low flow resistance. 2. It requires less effort to open and close. It is in comparison to globe valves, because whether it is open or closed, the movement direction of the gate is perpendicular to the flow direction of the medium. 3. Large height and long opening/closing time. The opening and closing stroke of the gate plate is large, and the lifting is accomplished via a screw. 4. Water hammer phenomenon is unlikely to occur. The reason is the long shutdown time. 5. The medium can flow in either direction, making installation easy. The channels on both sides of the gate valve are symmetrical. 6. The structural length (the distance between the two connecting end faces of the housing) is small. 7. It has a simple shape, short structural length, good manufacturability, and a wide range of applications. 8. It features a compact structure, high stiffness of the valves, smooth flow channels, and low flow resistance. The sealing surfaces are made of stainless steel and cemented carbide, ensuring a long service life. PTFE packing is used for reliable sealing, while the operation is simple and flexible. Disadvantage: Erosion and scratches are likely to occur between the sealing surfaces, making maintenance difficult. It has large external dimensions, requires space to open, and takes a long time to open and close. The structure is relatively complex
Globe valves are a common type of valve widely used in petrochemical industries. They are employed frequently, unless there are special circumstances; high-quality globe valves can last for a long time
Well, how should I put it? For all valves, sealing performance is an essential requirement, but different types of valves place different emphasis on this aspect. In terms of sealing performance, gate valves are definitely less sealed than ball valves (when comparing valves of the same brand and quality), but they are certainly cheaper than ball valves. Therefore, the type of valve must be selected based on specific operating conditions (diameter, medium, temperature, etc.)
Gate valves are probably the most widely used type of valve at present; they offer good sealing performance. However, no matter what type of valve it is, one should not rely on them exclusively, as internal leakage is a common problem with valves.
Valves with better quality can be used for several years without any problems
You need to consider your actual operating conditions to choose the specific material for the gate valve
Whether it’s airtight or not depends on the medium
Good brands are relatively easy to use and last longer; generally, you get what you pay for
