Dear Haihao friends! My project includes a materials storage warehouse that is 105 meters long and 63 meters wide, with a construction area of 6615 square meters. The design firm has provided us with the blueprints for the automatic sprinkler system intended for drainage purposes for our review. I noticed that the design of the sprinkler pipelines is as follows: there are 3 sets of sprinkler systems in the warehouse, evenly distributed across the space. The main supply pipe for each set of sprinkler systems is DN200, and there are 36 branch pipes in total. The distance between each pair of adjacent branch pipes is 2950 mm. The branch pipes extend from the main pipe outward; an upright sprinkler head is installed every 3 meters. Starting from the main pipe, the diameter of the branch pipes decreases from DN100 every 3 meters to DN80, and then again to DN50 after another 3 meters. Generally, the sprinkler heads used are of DN25 size. I always feel that with 36 branches, using a main pipe of DN200 is a bit too small. Moreover, there’s no need for the branch pipes leading to the sprinklers to go from DN100 all the way down to DN50; it would be more appropriate to use DN100, DN80, or even DN50 for those branch pipes. I’m not very familiar with this, but since it comes from a design institute, it meets the relevant standard requirements first and foremost. You can’t do whatever you want; if you have any doubts, you can look up the relevant regulations and follow them. . Personal opinion.

I mean, seeing if it can be simplified to reduce design redundancy. The construction difficulty has increased and costs have risen; it is necessary to simplify the design further while still meeting the requirements.
The main pipe at the end with a DN50 diameter must be filled with water in order to ensure that the DN25 nozzles can open with sufficient flow rate and initial velocity (this is just a guess; I’ve never worked on fire protection systems). Three DN50 branch pipes require a main pipe of DN100 based on cross-sectional area considerations. For a more secure design, a single DN100 main pipe should be used to reach the end; the designer’s approach is already quite economical. :)
