Enhancing quality awareness to promote high-quality development. ----------------------------------------- On August 28, 2023, the largest underwater pipeline terminal in China, designed and built domestically, was successfully installed in the waters off Lingshui, Hainan. This marks a new breakthrough in China’s deep-water engineering technologies, and it is of great significance for improving the capacity for manufacturing marine equipment and ensuring energy security. According to Xu HuaKui, deputy manager of the Phase II project of China National Offshore Oil Corporation’s \"Deep Sea One\" project, the submarine pipeline terminal installed this time is an important component of the 20-inch long-distance pipeline, which is a key control element in Phase II of \"Deep Sea One\". It is used to connect pipelines with other underwater production facilities. Made of a composite material with a stainless steel lining, it has a diameter of 508 millimeters, a wall thickness of 37.9 millimeters, and a weight of 79 tons. Its diameter, wall thickness, and weight all set new records for submarine pipeline terminals in China.
It is understood that the precision requirements for this installation are extremely high. During installation, it is necessary to place the submarine pipeline terminal, whose weight is equivalent to that of 80 cars, on the seabed at a depth of nearly a kilometer, in the midst of rough seas. The bowward deviation must not exceed 1.5 degrees, and the horizontal deviation must not exceed 2.5 degrees, which poses significant challenges to the installation process. According to Song Yanlei, the offshore installation manager for the second phase of the \"Deep Sea No.1\" project at CNOOC Engineering, CNOOC has independently developed five new techniques, including \"integral side-mounted installation of submarine pipelines\" and \"underwater monitoring using high-precision positioning systems.\" Careful planning was carried out through tabletop simulations, virtual drills, and onshore installation tests, with the construction plans being optimized repeatedly to improve installation efficiency and operational safety. It took less than 3 hours to lower the submarine pipeline terminals, and the installation accuracy met all technical requirements. It is reported that the proven geological reserves of natural gas for Phase 2 of the \"Deep Sea No.1\" project amount to 50 billion cubic meters. This project introduces an innovative oil and gas development model that combines an underwater production system, a shallow-water jacket processing platform, and a remote control system for deep-water semi-submersible platforms. Once operational, this setup will enable the Deep Sea No.1 gas field to increase its annual production from 3 billion cubic meters to 4.5 billion cubic meters, making it an important source of gas for ensuring China’s energy security.
