This old photo was taken in 1920, showing the precast concrete pipes invented by Canadians. It can withstand a weight of 21,300 kilograms, but since no testing machinery had been developed at that time, the inventor used this makeshift method for testing. They laid wooden planks on the pipes, which were filled with rows of sandbags; on top of those, there was a group of workers, creating a very impressive sight. And the inventor sat inside the pipe to show his confidence in his invention.
This is the static load test commonly used in civil engineering testing; a static load is applied in such tests. Since each bag of concrete (or fine sand or square pile) is relatively light, a volume equivalent to an entire room’s worth of these materials is often required to achieve the desired testing weight. Dynamic loads are also often used when measuring bridge loads, with loaded trucks being a common example.
In 1969, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was completed and opened to traffic. The dynamic load tests used to measure the bridge’s strength and load-bearing capacity were simple: tanks were simply used for these tests.
