This marks a significant breakthrough in China’s efforts to make use of existing long-distance pipeline resources, moving from theoretical research to practical application. It provides a model project that can be replicated and applied to advance the scale-up of carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies. China’s first on-site test of converting a long-distance pipeline for carbon dioxide transport was carried out on a pipeline that had its flow halted. The staff conducted adaptation evaluations for the pipeline modification and comprehensive safety upgrades through the system, transporting carbon dioxide via a 21-kilometer pipeline that was no longer in use and a 6-kilometer length of newly installed high-pressure flexible composite pipe to the Zhongyuan Oilfield for oil displacement and sequestration operations. Thus, the entire process of modifying the oil pipeline for carbon dioxide transportation and carrying out oil displacement and sequestration was successfully verified on-site. With the further advancement of the \"dual carbon\" goals, China has achieved significant results in reducing carbon emissions; however, due to its industrial structure and energy demands, the annual total emissions of carbon dioxide remain as high as hundreds of billions of tons. The large-scale deployment of the carbon capture, utilization, and storage industry relies on establishing long-distance, safe, and cost-effective carbon dioxide transportation systems, and upgrading existing long-distance pipelines is a key approach to overcoming this challenge. The successful completion of this experiment has enabled China to make rapid progress in this field, opening up new paths for the green transformation of the country’s energy industry. It will provide strong support for the transition of CCUS from pilot applications to large-scale deployment, helping to achieve the \"dual carbon\" goals at an earlier date.
