Hello everyone. Today, when starting up an electrolyzer (for chlorine production), sparks were observed on the cathode outlet hose. What are all the reasons? How can it be solved and avoided? Thank you all! !
1. If there is a leak in the hose or nut at the cathode outlet of the electrolyzer, fire can occur due to the hydrogen leakage. Measure: Replace O-rings frequently and address leaks promptly. 2. If sparking is observed in the hose without any leakage, it may be due to insufficient flow rate of the catholyte. The electrolyte is charged, and the potential between the charges varies. If the flow rate of the electrolyte is low (i.e., the resistance is low), discharge occurs between the charges; furthermore, collisions between the charges also generate sparks. (My personal understanding)

I agree with the second point from the second floor; the solution is to increase the circulation rate of the catholyte solution.
Check whether the neutral point of the cell current is offset and whether there is a potential difference with respect to ground.
Is the bending degree of the outlet bellows insufficient?
I think what you mean by the ignition of the outlet hose refers to the inside of the hose, and this has occurred in both chlorine engineering projects and Woody electrolyzers. The liquid is charged; when the flow rate is low, the liquid cannot flow continuously from the electrolytic cell to the collection pipe. Sparking occurs when the liquid flowing from the cell to the collection pipe comes into contact with the collection pipe (or with the liquid at the inlet of the collection pipe). As long as the tube isn’t leaking, it’s safe. You can drive it with confidence.
