What are the various production processes for natural soda and soda ash? What are the compositional requirements for raw materials for each production process? If the sodium chloride content is high, how can it be separated?
The main production methods for soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na2CO3) include the following: 1. Solvay process (also known as the ammonia-soda process): This is the most widely used method for producing soda ash in the world, accounting for over 70% of global soda ash production. It is produced by the reaction of ammonia, water, and carbon dioxide in a sodium chloride solution to form sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is then converted into sodium carbonate (soda ash) through heating, with ammonia being recycled in the process. The raw material required is high-purity table salt (sodium chloride) with low impurity levels, as impurities can interfere with the production process and affect product quality. 2. Trona method: This is a direct mining method that uses trona, a naturally occurring sodium carbonate mineral, as raw material. There are large deposits of thorium in Wyoming and other places in the United States. The raw material is trona ore, and soda ash is typically produced through processes such as mining, crushing, dissolution, and crystallization. 3. Natural alkaline lake method: Extracting sodium carbonate from natural lakes containing sodium carbonate. Qinghai Lake in China is a natural source of soda ash, from which soda ash is purified through natural evaporation and crystallization. The raw material for this process is natural brine from alkaline lakes; the requirements regarding impurities such as sodium chloride vary from place to place, and certain separation processes are usually necessary. To address the issue of high sodium chloride content, separating soda ash from sodium chloride relies primarily on their difference in solubility. Sodium carbonate has a lower solubility in water than sodium chloride, so separation can be achieved using the principle of crystallization. At a certain temperature, by controlling the evaporation of water or the cooling process, sodium carbonate can be made to crystallize preferentially. Furthermore, the solubility of certain components can also be altered by adding chemical reagents to achieve separation. .
This kind of problem isn’t some difficult technical issue. The simplest method for producing natural soda is to let alkaline water in lakes naturally produce natural soda containing crystalline water during winter; no technology is required, it relies solely on natural processes. For example, the traditional oral alkali was natural soda ash produced in the saline-alkaline lakes of Zhangjiakou area in Hebei Province during winter. Additionally, the main method for large-scale production of soda ash is the combined alkali production process, which involves using salt and ammonia to produce sodium bicarbonate under certain conditions, followed by calcination to obtain soda ash. This process is also known as the Hou’s alkali production method.
