Article 070 of the regulations issued by the China Chlor-Alkali Industry Association in 2010 states that dry chlorine (in gas or liquid form) at normal temperatures can react with aluminum, arsenic, gold, mercury, selenium, tellurium, and tin. Dry chlorine reacts violently with titanium; therefore, titanium materials are prohibited from being used in systems involving dry chlorine. When carbon steel is used in processes involving dry chlorine, it must be kept within a specified temperature range. If the process temperature exceeds 149°C, materials that are more resistant to high-temperature corrosion caused by chlorine than carbon steel should be used. At temperatures above 200°C, chlorine rapidly corrodes carbon steel, and at temperatures higher than 251°C, combustion can occur in the presence of chlorine. Rubber gaskets must not be used for sealing pipe flanges, equipment flanges, or structural components.
