The original poster did not properly understand that the purpose of adding reducing sulfites during the saltwater purification process is not to remove chloride ions, but rather to eliminate active chlorine in the desalinated water. Active chlorine has oxidizing properties, while chloride ions do not have such properties; moreover, there is no need to remove the chloride ions from saltwater. If the chloride ions in saltwater are removed, what sense is there in electrolyzing it?
