A reaction will occur, producing a barium carbonate precipitate. Separation can be achieved through mechanical filtration.
Sodium carbonate reacts with barium ions to form barium carbonate precipitate. However, the solubility product of barium carbonate is greater than that of barium sulfate; at the same temperature, the solubility of barium carbonate precipitate is higher than that of barium sulfate precipitate. If you are using barium chloride to remove sulfate ions from saline water, the barium chloride solution must be added before the sodium carbonate solution, with a certain interval between them.
When barium chloride is added, isn’t it ensured that there are slightly more sulfate ions than barium chloride? There should be no more barium chloride left later on, right? When barium chloride is added, isn’t it ensured that there are slightly more sulfate ions than barium chloride? There shouldn’t be any barium chloride left later on, right? Barium carbonate is a precipitate, but this shouldn’t happen at all—the reaction does need to take place; before entering the electrolytic cell, it must react with hydrochloric acid, and the carbon dioxide produced affects the purity of chlorine gas.
The reaction result is the formation of calcium carbonate and barium sulfate precipitates.
What I mean is that no barium chloride will remain after adding it, because there’s an excess of sulfate ions; there’s no barium left to react with the carbonate ions
