What is the reaction rate of sodium carbonate solution with carbon dioxide? Is it an instant reaction or a slow reaction? It is now planned to use a sodium carbonate solution to wash and absorb waste gas containing a small amount of chlorine and a large amount of carbon dioxide. The purpose is to absorb the chlorine gas inside, but not to absorb carbon dioxide, or only in trace amounts. Since the carbon dioxide content in the exhaust gas is very high, its absorption would consume a large amount of sodium carbonate solution, which would **increase the operating costs associated with exhaust gas treatment.
After absorbing a certain amount of carbon dioxide, the sodium carbonate solution is converted into sodium bicarbonate; at this point the pH value decreases, and its ability to absorb chlorine is reduced. If you want to improve the efficiency of chlorine absorption, it is recommended to add a certain amount of reducing agent to the solution; this will not have a significant impact on the efficiency of chlorine absorption. If this absorption occurs on a regular basis and the absorption of chlorine is stable, it is possible to consider using bromides for absorption; in this way, bromine can be produced simultaneously with the absorption of chlorine, achieving two goals at once. Moreover, there is no need to worry about the impact of sodium carbonate being converted to sodium bicarbonate on the absorption of chlorine.
