Why are the manholes of the spent acid converter welded? Thank you
What manufacturing process is used? Haven’t heard that the population is welded together
It is now common to use welding for converter manholes. Of course, those using flanges exist as well; high requirements are placed on the sealing flanges. When I was at the factory before, I saw asbestos ropes coated with water glass being used as gaskets, and they were disposable. If the flange isn’t sealed properly, the only option is to stop the machine and fix it again.
The manhole of the converter is preferably made of carbon steel, as it can be removed more quickly compared to stainless steel. Plasma cutting is the only method available for stainless steel manholes, and it is relatively slow.
Welding the converter manhole is safer and does not require frequent movement. If the sealing is not good when flanges are used, it becomes more difficult to deal with the issue. The manhole is also opened during major repairs; that little extra time doesn’t matter.
We weld the inside and use flanges on the outside. It’s troublesome and a waste of time – just how urgent is it?
Just weld it directly – who cares about the time it took to cut it when it’s time for maintenance? Flange sealing is very difficult to control
