In the finished acid, mercury exists mainly in a dissolved state. The source may be mercury impurities present in the raw material pyrite, or mercury contamination from the equipment and materials used in the production process. Removal methods can include chemical precipitation, activated carbon adsorption, or ion exchange. .

The mercury content in the resulting concentrated sulfuric acid, produced by the roasting of pyrite to produce sulfuric acid, is closely related to the composition of the pyrite feedstock. In finished sulfuric acid, mercury exists primarily in the form of mercuric bisulfate (dihydrogen mercuric sulfate), as in a strong acidic environment sulfuric acid only undergoes first-order ionization. Removing mercury from sulfuric acid that has already been produced is a very difficult task; it is not feasible from a technical standpoint.
