When the scaled part is knocked off, the current level drops. In such cases, my first thought was to use acid; however, after seeking advice, I learned that using hydrochloric acid can lead to explosions, as it contains free chlorine which can produce chloroacetylene (it seems that in scrubbers, the effective chlorine concentration needs to be strictly controlled at 0.085–0.12%). Sulfuric acid, on the other hand, produces calcium sulfate, and weak acids cannot remove the scale. I would like to ask all fellow sailors for any good suggestions; please advise
I’m very clear about which devices the feeders and transfer pumps are; as for scaling, our experience suggests carrying out regular acid cleaning or high-pressure water cleaning, depending on whether your schedule allows for such regular treatments
Use a calcium sulfate cleaning agent with a pH value of 7.0±0.1 – it is non-corrosive and acts rapidly; the dirt is removed at a speed visible to the naked eye. If you need it, I can send you samples for free. Of course, you need to be sure that the scale in question is indeed calcium sulfate.
