On June 16, the production line for large-tow carbon fiber at Jilin Chemical Fiber Group, which has an annual output capacity of 4,000 tons and is specifically designed for offshore wind turbine blades, was successfully commissioned on its first attempt. This is another crucial breakthrough achieved in the large-scale production of thick-tow carbon fiber, following China’s attainment of the world’s top position in terms of carbon fiber production and sales volume in 2025. It also provides a vital boost to the development of larger-scale offshore wind power equipment in China by ensuring self-reliance in key materials. As a customized production line designed specifically for the manufacturing of ultra-large offshore wind turbine blades, its products can directly meet the production requirements for 305-meter-class ultra-large offshore wind blades. Moreover, the overall production efficiency of this line is 20% higher than that of conventional production lines. Currently, global offshore wind power development is accelerating its expansion into deeper waters; the capacity of individual turbines continues to exceed 18 megawatts, and the diameter of their rotors keeps setting new industry records. Traditional fiberglass materials can no longer meet the dual requirements of providing sufficient structural strength along with light weight for such long blades. Thanks to its key properties such as high specific strength, high specific modulus, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance, carbon fiber has become the preferred reinforcing material for the spar caps of large wind turbine blades. Meanwhile, large-tow carbon fiber products serve as a crucial medium for facilitating the large-scale application of carbon fiber in the wind energy sector and reducing costs throughout its entire life cycle. The dedicated production line put into operation by Jilin Chemical Fibers meets precisely the industry’s key demands for high cost-effectiveness and stable large-scale supply, thereby removing the bottlenecks in upstream material supply for the enlargement of offshore wind turbine blades. Once this production line reaches full capacity, Jilin Chemical Fiber’s total annual carbon fiber production capacity will rise to 87,000 tons, further solidifying its position as the world’s largest carbon fiber production base.
