In 2026, during the 25th National “Safety Production Month”, everyone is encouraged to prioritize safety and be capable of responding to emergencies; efforts will also be made to identify and rectify potential risks and hazards. -------------------------------------------------- In the past two years, environmental inspections have become more frequent, with stricter controls being imposed at all levels regarding industrial wastewater discharge and pollution management within industrial parks. Having worked in this field for so many years and having visited sites in various industries such as pharmaceuticals and chemicals, paper manufacturing, coal mine wastewater treatment, power plants, food and beverage production, and meat processing, I have seen too many companies that are careless in their daily operations and rely on luck. As soon as inspectors arrive, problems are identified, penalties are imposed, and production is halted for rectification – an approach that proves to be counterproductive. In fact, environmental inspections focusing on wastewater never involve random checks; they concentrate on a few key locations. Today, we will explain in detail the 5 most critical red lines that need to be avoided at the operational level. Enterprise environmental officers and maintenance staff should use this information to conduct self-inspections and avoid risks in advance. First red line: mixing of rainwater and sewage – this is the issue that inspectors check first and foremost. In many factory areas, rainwater drains and sewage pipelines are connected in a chaotic manner; during rainy days, production wastewater is discharged directly into the environment through these pipelines. There is no need for testing – the situation can be identified simply by looking at it on site. Penalties are imposed quickly, but making corrections is very difficult. The second red line: Falsification in online monitoring, abnormal data. Situations such as the shutdown of online instruments for measuring COD, ammonia nitrogen, and total nitrogen, deliberate obstruction, dilution of water samples, or data tampering—all these are now subject to real-time comparison via big data systems. Any deviation in instantaneous flow rates or water quality curves triggers an immediate warning. Such actions constitute serious violations, and those responsible will face severe consequences. Third red line: The biochemical system operates under suboptimal conditions. To save on electricity and chemical costs, aeration is turned on and off intermittently; sludge is not discharged; the process runs despite existing issues, with water quality being maintained solely through the temporary addition of chemicals. Upon checking the operating conditions, maintenance records, and historical data, the inspector can immediately see that the system is not operating properly. Fourth red line: Improper disposal of concentrated water and waste liquids. Chemical, pharmaceutical, and power plants that implement reclaimed water use and zero-emission systems all generate high-salt concentrated water and waste mother liquors. Many enterprises transport and dump waste illegally in secret, without maintaining any records of proper disposal. Should they be traced back, both the responsible persons and the enterprises will be held accountable. Fifth red line: The improper storage of hazardous waste and sludge – such as biochemical sludge, Fenton-type hazardous waste, and used chemical containers – in the open air, without any measures to prevent leakage, without proper records, and without contracts for compliant disposal. The leachate from these storage areas seeps directly into the ground, representing a major risk point that is subject to thorough inspection during audits. To be honest, environmental protection these days is not about meeting inspection requirements; it’s about maintaining compliance on a regular basis. Rather than scrambling at the last minute and spending money on rectifications when inspectors arrive, it’s better to standardize all aspects—such as pipeline networks, processes, records, and the disposal of solid and hazardous waste—on a regular basis. This way, production can proceed smoothly without any worries.
