I just took on the role of workshop supervisor in a chemical plant, responsible for the areas of utility engineering, including circulating water systems, air separation units, and refrigeration wastewater treatment. As the newly appointed workshop supervisor, if the existing work in the workshop is already well-organized, operating smoothly, and with a positive atmosphere among the staff, the main task should be to maintain normal operations first, before considering further improvements. If there are obvious problems and their causes are known, it is necessary to start with the main issues, motivate everyone to work together to resolve them, and in doing so gradually get to know the people and situations in the workshop, thereby laying a foundation for subsequent actions.
Are there any systems in terms of processes, equipment, and safety management that I could draw on?
It’s best to weave these things by oneself, something that suits one’s own needs – simple and concise, so that employees can easily master elements that are common to everyone. It is mainly to prepare for exams. I think the first thing to do when taking on a new role is to assess the technical capabilities of the people in various positions – that’s an urgent priority. Don’t rush to establish any systems to manage people. Currently, among the workforce, the ability to speak tends to be stronger than the ability to act. In my opinion, the key aspects of utility engineering are: under the premise of ensuring safety and environmental protection, regular inspections and process control require special attention. Regarding safety, apart from risks such as frostbite caused by chilled water, drowning related to circulating water, management of confined spaces involving wastewater, and other potential mechanical hazards, overall safety can still be effectively controlled.
