By 10 a.m. on June 29, the Bozhuang Sluice in Dacheng County, Hebei Province, was opened, allowing water from the Ziyaha River to flow into Tianjin’s territory and merge with the section of the Ziyaha River within Tianjin, thus achieving full connectivity across the entire length of the river. To date, the 627-kilometer network of rivers designated for water replenishment, including the Daqing River, Baiyangdian Lake, Hutuo River, and Ziya River, has been fully connected, with a total of 167 million cubic meters of water having been supplied. On June 11 and 17, the water supply routes to the Daqing River (Baiyangdian) and the Hutuo River were both completed across their entire lengths. To further enhance the water replenishment effect, the Ministry of Water Resources and the People’s Government of Hebei Province, in light of the progress of the water replenishment efforts, continued to supply additional water flow and extended the water supply routes in the direction of the Ziya River. On June 20, the control gate at the Xianxian junction of the Hutuo River was opened, officially initiating ecological water replenishment to the Ziya River. The Ziyah River is a tributary of the Haihe River; it flows through counties and cities such as Xianxian, Hejian, and Dacheng in Hebei Province, and reaches Jinghai District in Tianjin where it merges with the Daqing River. Due to severe water scarcity, the Ziya River has been dry for many years. This water replenishment plays a significant role in restoring the Ziya River ecosystem and reviving life in rivers and lakes. Ecological water replenishment in the summer of 2021 will continue until early July. The relevant departments and agencies under the Ministry of Water Resources, in conjunction with the Hebei Provincial Department of Water Resources, the Tianjin Water Affairs Bureau, and other entities, will further strengthen scheduling, monitoring, supervision, and inspections to ensure that the benefits of water replenishment are sustained. At the same time, the organization evaluates the effectiveness of water replenishment, in order to accumulate experience for the scientific implementation of ecological water replenishment in rivers and lakes in the future, as well as to facilitate the mitigation of groundwater over-extraction.
