For road construction, cement concrete or asphalt concrete has traditionally been used due to their strong load-bearing capacity; they are the only viable options for roads with high traffic volumes such as urban roads and highways. However, in many situations involving light loads, such as rural roads, ecological trails, and temporary paths, soil stabilization technology offers significant advantages over concrete, thanks to its excellent cost-effectiveness and adaptability to different geological conditions. Comprehensive analysis of the specific indicators in the Ministry of Transport’s “Typical Cases”: Stabilized soil pavement technology. Stabilized soil pavement technology versus concrete pavement technology: Stabilized soil technology can be divided into two categories – “fluidized stabilized soil” and “compacted stabilized soil”. The technology mentioned in the Ministry of Transport’s “Typical Cases” under the category of stabilized soil pavements falls under the category of compacted stabilized soil; it is also known as road-stabilized soil, in-situ stabilized soil, or solid stabilized soil – the meaning is clear once understood. Unlike \"fluidized stabilized soil\" which is widely used in backfilling works, the mechanism of action for \"compacted stabilized soil\" involves \"compaction\" in order to achieve strength; the standard that is currently followed is mainly T/CECS737-2020 \"Technical Specifications for the Application of Stabilized Soil in Roads\", and the explanations regarding this standard are as follows:
Solidified soil mixtures consist of three essential components: soil, binder, and soil solidification admixtures. The amount of water to be used is determined based on specific conditions; in addition, admixtures or other additives can be included, just like in concrete, but these are not necessary. The specifications and requirements for each component are clearly outlined in the standard T/CECS737-2020 \"Technical Specifications for the Use of Solidified Soil in Roads\", which can be consulted for further details. As shown in the figure below, considering the process flow of the case selected under the theme of \"Stabilized Soil Pavement Technology\" in the Ministry of Transport’s \"Typical Cases\": the soil material refers to the plain soil that is spread out ; Cementing material, namely inorganic cementing materials primarily made of cement that are spread out ; Soil stabilization admixtures are added during the cold recycling mixing stage. According to the Ministry of Transport’s “Typical Cases” section on the process flow for \"solidified soil pavement\" technology, the application of this pavement type shows that, since it was put into use in March 2025, no ruts or potholes have appeared; it maintains a high degree of structural integrity and uniform load-bearing capacity, has good waterproof properties, and meets the requirements of light traffic. In the field of construction projects, we would like to share a project example for your reference: the construction technology of stabilized soil pavements has a suitable application in temporary sites and roads for construction projects, such as the living areas of project teams. Traditionally, concrete pavements are used, but they need to be demolished after short periods of use, resulting in significant waste of resources. On the other hand, the stabilized soil technology makes use of locally available materials and is environmentally friendly. For instance, in 2024, China State Construction Eighth Engineering Bureau already applied this technology in the living areas of its project teams, replacing concrete pavements and achieving good results as a model.
