China National Petroleum Corporation announced that at 5:01 a.m. on November 21, Beijing time, the third processing unit of Russia’s Yamal LNG project was successfully brought online, producing the first drop of LNG liquid. This marks the full completion and operation of this largest economic cooperation project between China and Russia to date, with an annual capacity to process 25 billion cubic meters of natural gas, produce 16.5 million tons of LNG, and 1 million tons of condensate. It took 5 days, 5 hours, and 6 minutes from the introduction of feed gas to the third column of process units in the Yamal LNG project at 23:55 on November 15 until the first drop of LNG liquid was produced. It reduced the start-up time record for large-scale LNG projects of this kind worldwide, set during the commissioning of Phase 2 of the project, by a full 3 days, 12 hours, and 19 minutes. The successful commissioning of the third column of processing units also means that this LNG project, with the largest production capacity in the Arctic region, was brought online at least 7 months earlier than planned, thanks to the joint efforts of all shareholders and project participants. The Yamal LNG project is developed jointly by Russian company Novatek, China National Petroleum Corporation, Total, and the China Silk Road Fund. In December 2017 and August 2018, the first and second units of the Yamal LNG project were put into operation respectively. On July 19 this year, the first shipload of liquefied natural gas supplied from the Yamal project to China arrived at the Rudong LNG receiving station of Sinopec in Jiangsu via the Northeast Passage across the Arctic, marking a new chapter in the supply of liquefied natural gas from the Yamal LNG project to China.
