Hello, experts. I’m facing a big problem today regarding analysis methods such as TBP, D7169, D2887, and D1160. Could anyone please explain the differences between these methods, their appropriate applications, and whether it’s possible to convert one method into another? Is there any conversion formula or something? I would be extremely grateful if you could help.
I don’t know the answer to this question; could any expert who specializes in analysis please explain it?

These are methods for distilling petroleum and its products; the ASTM standards should describe in detail the scope of application of these three methods as well as the purpose of the tests involved. It is recommended that the original poster read and understand the three methods carefully, or consult the analysis center at the Beijing Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology. TBP – True Boiling Point (distillation method). ASTM D7169 – Gas chromatography-based simulated distillation, used for heavier fractions and crude oil, including both atmospheric and reduced-pressure distillation. ASTM D2887 – Also gas chromatography-based simulated distillation, but applied to fractionated oils; it involves atmospheric distillation. ASTM D1160 – Reduced-pressure distillation, in which actual distillation is carried out using a reduced-pressure distillation apparatus. ASTM D86 – Determination of the boiling range of light petroleum products, also known as Enneberg distillation. These are my memories from working at RIPP 35 years ago; I believe they are correct. If you go to RIPP for clarification, follow the answers given by their experts there. Since distillation is a test that is closely related to the experimental conditions, there is a correlation between the data results from different tests, yet the deviations are also significant. En’s distillation is a practical distillation method in which a certain volume of oil sample (usually 100 ml) is distilled under specific conditions, with the volume of the distillate and the corresponding temperature being measured. Simulated distillation utilizes the separation principle of chromatography to separate and analyze fractions (actually components) in order of increasing temperature. Simulated distillation in chromatography uses only a very small amount of sample for analysis, with the distillation curve being calculated using specialized software.
Can simulated distillation be used to determine the specific value of C? Finally, does the data need to be converted into actual distillation values as well?
Distillation arranges the components based on their boiling points, rather than on their carbon count. There is a relationship between the carbon count of hydrocarbons and their boiling points, but due to the presence of isomerism, this relationship is not a strict mathematical one.
TBP is used in true boiling point distillation, ASTM D2887, and ASTM D7169 where a chromatograph is employed to determine the simulated distillation range by establishing a curve of normal alkane retention times versus temperature; ASTM D1160 uses a reduced pressure distillation range. In short, TBP is an analytical instrument for determining true boiling points; ASTM D2887 and ASTM D7169 refer to an analytical instrument: a simulated distillation apparatus (which can be considered a chromatograph), while ASTM D1160 refers to a vacuum distillation apparatus.
