Ionic liquids are salts composed entirely of cations and anions; some of these acidic ionic liquids are virtually non-volatile, have low corrosivity, and are environmentally friendly. The main hazard of ionic liquids lies in the fact that the aluminum-chloride metal-coordinated anions present in them are sensitive to water vapor; upon contact with water, they react violently, releasing HCl gas. They also react when in contact with alcohols as well as water vapor in the air. HCl can cause certain damage to the human respiratory tract! This shutdown was the first one for ionic liquids, and it was also the first attempt at carrying out such a shutdown; it went fairly smoothly! However, many difficulties were also encountered when removing the ionic liquid, one of which was the residual amount of hydrocarbons and ionic liquid left in the equipment. Opening the vapor line directly to low pressure will cause the hydrocarbons to carry ionic liquids, which in turn will block the low-pressure line and result in incomplete purification of the hydrocarbons within the equipment. Moreover, ionic liquids are also difficult to clean thoroughly.

It’s true that ionic liquids have low volatility; however, I don’t believe they have low corrosivity, and I certainly don’t think they are environmentally friendly! In fact, looking at the entire process from the production and application of ionic liquids to the final treatment of waste acid, I think ionic liquids are not environmentally friendly at all! By the way, many ionic liquids are biootoxic, not only to humans but also to the entire biosphere, including microorganisms, plants, animals, and so on; it’s just that chemical engineers aren’t willing to tell you this~ If you’re interested, you can look into it. As for the toxicity of alkylated ionic liquids, I haven’t seen any information on that.

Ionic liquids are actually a commercial term for substances that are strong Lewis acids. They remain stable in the absence of water and are non-corrosive, but when water is present, they undergo intense hydrolysis, producing corrosive acids and hydroxides that tend to form precipitates, leading to blockages in pipes, as mentioned by the original poster. When the alkylation unit discharges material containing ionic liquids, it is best to remove the ionic liquids while there is a large amount of material present, and strict measures must be taken to prevent moisture from entering the unit. This operation should be clearly described in the process operation manual.
