On September 14, it was learned from the China National Petroleum Corporation’s Research Institute of Petrochemical Technology that as of September 3, the PHR series of residue hydrogenation catalysts developed independently by the institute had completed one cycle of operation at Dalian Petrochemical. The industrial application test of Russian crude oil residue hydrogenation technology was a complete success, marking a new milestone in the research and development as well as application of residue hydrogenation technologies by China National Petroleum Corporation. Russia is one of the important suppliers of crude oil to our country. Russian residue oil has high levels of sulfur, nitrogen, residue, and metals, making it unsuitable for direct use in catalytic cracking units; therefore, it needs to be subjected to hydroprocessing. In this industrial test, Dalian Petrochemical, for the first time, set higher requirements for parameters such as the carbon residue value and metal content of the hydrotreated residue based on the original design specifications of the plant, and added a control criterion for the nitrogen content in the hydrotreated residue. The fixed-bed residue hydrogenation technology innovation team at the Petrochemical Research Institute overcame the technical challenges related to the deep denitration of Russian residues and the thorough conversion of residual carbon by innovating in catalyst support preparation and catalyst grading, as well as by employing catalyst dense packing technology. They successfully developed a hydrogenation treatment technology for Russian crude oil residues, and carried out catalyst production, packing, and commissioning guidance with high quality. During the industrial trial operation, the team regularly held evaluation discussions with the plant technicians to ensure the stable operation of the plant. The number of days of stable operation for this industrial application, the total amount of crude oil processed, and the amount of crude oil processed per ton of catalyst all exceeded the design values by 61%, 62%, and 62% respectively, achieving stable full-load operation over an extremely long period of time. It is reported that the residue hydrogenation catalyst developed by the Petrochemical Research Institute has been used on four occasions at Dalian Xitai, Dalian Petrochemical, and Taiwan CNPC. The complete residue hydrogenation technology has been applied in the construction of two residue hydrogenation units with an annual capacity of 1.5 million tons each at Jinzhou Petrochemical and Jinxī Petrochemical, providing strong technical support for the high-quality development of the company’s refining and chemical processing operations.
