Recently, the moving-bed propane dehydrogenation to propylene technology (SPDH), which holds independent intellectual property rights owned by the China Institute of Rock and Mineral Sciences and Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Company, completed the preliminary design for Zhenhai Refining & Chemical’s 600,000-ton-per-year propane dehydrogenation to propylene project. This is the first 600,000 tons/year PDH plant to utilize a domestically developed process package.
Propane dehydrogenation to produce propylene is an important process for increasing propylene production; however, at present this technology is mainly in the hands of foreign patent holders, which severely restricts the development of China’s petrochemical industry. In 2018, the Institute of Rock Mechanics and Engineering collaborated with Guangzhou (Luoyang) Engineering Company on the development, design, and optimization of the propane dehydrogenation process package (SPDH), whose overall technical level is capable of competing with mature foreign processes.

There is no doubt about the process package development capabilities of domestic design institutes; the key issue is whether the SPDH catalyst can achieve an equally advanced level in terms of conversion rate, stability, and lifespan
The Institute of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnology has developed the PST-100 mobile-bed propane dehydrogenation catalyst; The Energy and Chemical Engineering team at Tianjin University has also developed efficient platinum-based catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH).
