Recently, Quanzhou Petrochemical’s industrial demonstration project for producing high-performance carbon black from 70,000 tons per year of petrochemical residue oil officially commenced operations. The technology for this project comes from the Carbon Black Research Institute, and it was built with an investment of 400 million yuan by Quanzhou Petrochemical. The facility includes a production unit for tire-grade carbon black with an annual capacity of 40,000 tons, a production unit for carbon black used in various products with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons, and a production unit for special-grade carbon black with an annual capacity of 10,000 tons. It is also equipped with a 65 t/h exhaust gas boiler as well as denitration and desulfurization systems. Completion of construction is expected by October 2023, with trial production starting in December of the same year. Upon completion, the project will provide higher-quality and more diverse products for the industries that utilize carbon black, thereby laying a solid foundation for the industrial transformation and upgrading of Quanzhou Petrochemical. The raw materials for this project include various polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon oils such as petroleum refining catalytic slurry, ethylene tar, and PO/SM sodium-free oil, which are used either alone or in combination. The products consist of carbon blacks for use in rubber and those for non-rubber applications (special carbon blacks). The main processing technologies employ patented techniques developed by the Carbon Black Research Institute, which are at an internationally advanced level. This project utilizes petroleum-based crude oil for the production of carbon black, thereby opening up a new source of high-quality crude oil for China’s carbon black industry. It addresses the issues of inconsistent quality and growing shortages of coal-based crude oil used in this industry, playing a role in strengthening and expanding the industry’s supply chain. Additionally, it will serve as a model for promoting technological advancement and improving efficiency in China’s carbon black industry. The products of this project include carbon black for rubber use and special types of carbon black, etc. They will provide higher-quality and more diverse products for industries that utilize carbon black, laying a solid foundation for the industrial transformation and upgrading of Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical. This will enable Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical to adhere to the principle of putting science first, to continue improving its industrial chain after achieving integration in refining and chemical production, to further reduce the use of oil and increase the production of chemical products, to develop high-end chemical products and new chemical materials, to keep investing in technological innovation and research and development, to improve the integrated coordination mechanism for research, production, and sales, to develop new polyolefin grades with high added value, and to acquire new chemical material technologies with independent intellectual property rights. All these efforts will support the sustainable and high-quality development of Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical through the use of advanced technologies.
