On December 26, Phase 1 of the Alkane Resources Comprehensive Utilization Project at Donghua Energy in Maoming, Guangdong, entered the commissioning phase. After the instruments were supplied with power, water, and gas, adjustments were made to the meters and valves, and the various processes within the facilities were gradually brought online. The operation will progress from running individual units to conducting joint tests. The Donghua Energy Alkane Resources Comprehensive Utilization Project commenced construction in March 2020, with a total investment of 40 billion yuan. It is the largest private industrial project launched in Maoming since the city’s establishment, and it will help build a industrial cluster worth 100 billion yuan, thereby contributing to the development of Guangdong’s coastal economic zone. The project will be implemented in three phases, with a total investment of 40 billion yuan. Focusing on the development of the propane-propylene-polypropylene industry chain, Phase 1 will involve an investment of around 16.6 billion yuan, to build 2 propane dehydrogenation units with a capacity of 1 million tons per year each and 4 polypropylene production units with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year each. Once operational, it will be able to produce 80,000 tons of hydrogen per year. Some of this hydrogen will be used to improve the quality of marine fuel oil, while the rest will be utilized to develop the hydrogen industry in Maoming, turning it into a well-known hub for this industry in the provinces of Guangdong, Hainan, and Guangxi, thereby enabling Maoming to make a strategic transition from an \"oil city\" to a \"hydrogen city\". At the construction site of the Donghua Energy project, the cranes of the propane dehydrogenation (PDH) unit loom tall, pipelines wind their way throughout the area, and the noise from various machines is constant; testing is being carried out simultaneously in multiple areas. The person in charge of Donghua Energy (Maoming) Co., Ltd. said that testing is intended to solve problems and help the equipment and instruments gradually adapt to actual production conditions. The trial run marks the transition of the project from equipment installation to the commissioning phase, taking a solid step forward toward completion and operation. It is understood that the Donghua Energy project took only 19 months from its commencement to completion and trial operation, which is far less than the average construction period of 24 months for similar facilities, thus setting a \"Maoming speed\" for manufacturing transformation. Maoming, known as the \"Oil City of the South,\" has already undergone two rounds of industrial transformation, moving from the processing of oil shale to that of imported crude oil, and then to integrated refining and chemical production. As the global chemical industry moves toward changes in the areas of gas-based chemicals and green chemistry, Maoming is also seeking its own third industrial transformation. At present, Maoming has planned to develop industrial parks for green chemicals and hydrogen energy. Led by the Donghua Energy project, efforts are being made to expand the industrial chain, with a focus on areas such as carbon fiber, 3D printing, and hydrogen energy, in order to accelerate the creation of industrial clusters worth hundreds of billions in Maoming.
