Currently, Mitsui Chemical’s 120,000 tons per year Tafmer polyolefin elastomer (POE) plant located on Jurong Island in Singapore is in the trial operation phase, with commercial operations set to begin in the second half of Mitsui’s fiscal year, that is, in March 2026. Osamu Yoshida, Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer of Mitsui Chemicals, Inc., explained, “Even after starting up, we don’t want to reach full capacity right away.” ” Osamu Yoshida went on to point out that while efforts are being made to expand the sales of Tafmer into new application areas, the supply and demand balance for POE materials faces challenges. Last year, Mitsui reported that competition in the solar panel market had intensified, which was a key focus for its POE expansion, especially due to inventory adjustments in China. Therefore, the group is working to expand the sales of Tafmer to high-performance packaging materials, engineering polymers, footwear, and other application areas. Regarding automotive applications, Osamu Yoshida said, “Some of our customers are bound by contracts that require them to purchase specified materials only at set times, so the transition is expected to take some time.” ”
