Guangxi Petrochemical: Original breakthrough achieved in high-end optical-grade polystyrene

On May 10, 2026, good news came from Guangxi Petrochemical: its fully independently developed optical-grade high-quality polystyrene product GPPS-550N was successfully produced, marking a groundbreaking achievement by the company in the field of high-end optical-grade chemical materials. This development filled a gap in the region for such high-end products and provided strong impetus for ensuring self-sufficiency and import substitution in China’s optical materials industry chain. At 9:00 on May 8, Guangxi Petrochemical officially initiated the process of switching product grades at its 300,000-ton/year polystyrene plant. Leveraging the plant’s process system, the task force identified the key process control points as well as the precise amounts of additives to be used. After 40 hours of continuous effort and meticulous tuning, the plant was able to produce qualified products, successfully feeding them into the dedicated storage areas. This enabled the company to achieve stable mass production of its first batch of optical-grade GPPS-550N, with all key performance indicators meeting the required standards from the very beginning. According to introductions, GPPS-550N is a specially formulated material with a white base and high transparency. It matches the performance characteristics of top-tier benchmark grades in the industry. It boasts notable advantages such as high light transmittance, excellent thermal stability, and strong compliance with safety standards, thus fully meeting the technical requirements for high-end optical-grade products. The products are focused on high-end application areas such as LED LCD displays and light-guiding optical components, meeting market demands precisely and filling the gap for similar high-end products in the region. The facility is equipped with 3 specialized production lines, each with an annual capacity of 100,000 tons. It can flexibly switch between the production of products in two series – general-grade and high-impact resistance grades – across multiple grades. It possesses a solid hardware foundation for the research and development of advanced new materials, customized production, and large-scale supply.
