The plastic linear gap gauge provides a simple and effective method for measuring gaps on fixed surfaces. It is particularly useful for measuring gaps when ordinary gap gauges cannot be inserted, or for measuring the gaps in split sliding bearings. It can measure the clearance of the large-end bearing without removing the shaft. This is a simple and accurate method for measuring the dynamic and static clearances between hidden surfaces. It enables the measurement of shaft clearances, protrusions, and ellipticity, allows for volume measurement, and takes surface roughness into account. Examples include the large end or main bearings, pipe flanges, cylinder gaskets, high points, enclosures, injection molding tools, etc. For instance, the clearance in the large end of a bearing or in its main bearings should be approximately 1/2000 of its diameter. Therefore, for a journal with a diameter of 2 inches (50.8 mm), the clearance should be 0.001 inches (0.025 mm). The amount of oil leaking from the pressure bearing increases approximately in proportion to the square of its clearance. Therefore, the amount of oil that can pass through a gap with a width of 0.002 inches (0.050 mm) is twice the amount that can pass through a gap with a width of 0.0015 inches (0.038 mm). If the pump capacity cannot meet this requirement, the pump flow rate will decrease, and the bearings will be damaged. This illustrates the importance of bearing installation accuracy. Plastic linear gap gauges can be used to detect high-dark spots on cylinder heads, pipe flanges, etc. It is very useful in the processes of production, inspection, and maintenance.
