Is there a relationship between the descent of the piston rod in a reciprocating compressor and the pressure of the packing purge gas?
I don’t think so; their functions are different. The reasons for the sinking of the piston rod include: 1. Loose measurement points, 2. Loose connection between the piston rod and the crosshead, 3. Wear of the piston support rings. When the piston rod sinks, it is mainly necessary to check for wear in the support rings in order to prevent wear of the cylinder
The fact is that without a pressure piston, the downward movement and the resulting fluctuations are very large
What is the pressure setting behind your pressure regulator? I think it should be set to the value specified in the design; that pressure shouldn’t affect the settlement value. Perhaps the issue lies with the instrument. We also forgot to add nitrogen to the packing, but that’s not the problem you mentioned

Piston sinking: One reason is wear of the support ring. The second is cylinder liner wear. Third is a loose connecting rod.
