Can the speed of a centrifugal compressor be varied? In cases where it is driven by a steam turbine or an inverter-driven motor, anti-surge devices are necessary; but is it still required when driven by a motor with a fixed speed? What are the conditions that determine whether a centrifugal compressor needs an anti-surge device?
During operation, centrifugal compressors may exhibit a phenomenon in which, when the load is below a certain value, the normal delivery of gas is disrupted; the gas flow rate fluctuates greatly, with intermittent inflows and outflows, resulting in severe oscillations and a noise similar to that of a person with asthma wheezing. To prevent this phenomenon from occurring, centrifugal compressors must have an anti-surge system.
Then all devices that use centrifuges will encounter surge problems, but in reality not all centrifuge-based devices are equipped with such a system – why is that?

It depends on the operating conditions; if there is a possibility that the operating point could enter the surge zone, then a anti-surge system is necessary. If the operating conditions are fixed and far from the surge zone, and no adjustments are needed during operation, then such a system isn’t required – flow control alone is sufficient to ensure proper operation

Is it possible that the recycle gas compressor will not experience surge conditions? For example, the EO recycle gas compressor in certain SD EO/EG processes……
Yes, I think the reason might be that the intake air flow is stable under cyclic gas operation, so there is no shortage of air. Additionally, there are no downstream systems connected to the cyclic gas, so nothing can cause the operating point to shift
