This post was last edited by jmdc on 2018-4-8 08:04. Should a worn drive shaft be repaired or replaced? If the keyway or bearing seat of a drive shaft is worn, can it be repaired by welding and then milling or by adding a sleeve, or must the entire shaft be replaced?
Specific parameters such as shaft diameter, length, and rotational speed are required to determine the solution, on the premise of repair.
They are generally treated through quenching and tempering. Care must be taken with the welding process when performing repairs; after the repairs are done, further processing is required； It mainly depends on the value of your shaft; if its value is high, it can be repaired, but if the value is low, it’s better to manufacture a new one.
The main factor to consider is the value of restoration. If the difficulty and effort required for restoration, along with labor costs, result in an expense that is hardly any different from that of a new shaft, then restoration certainly seems pointless.
The bearing seats are usually ground and surfaced, while the keyways can be reprocessed in a different direction
