Question regarding the need to use a hand-cranked oil pump to start old piston compressors

The unit has an old-style piston compressor, a three-stage vertical compressor. The tail end of the crankshaft is equipped with a gear pump; before starting the machine, it is necessary to operate the hand-cranked oil pump. The compressor can only be turned on once the oil pressure reaches 1 kg. I ask those who might start the machine without using the hand-cranked pump: won’t the crankshaft rotate more forcefully without manual operation, thus generating higher oil pressure? What was the reason for requiring the use of the hand-cranked oil pump in the past? Thank you!
I have never seen a compressor like the one you mentioned. Is the purpose of manually operating the oil pump before starting the machine to establish oil pressure and prevent the bearings from being damaged during startup?
