It depends on the brand you choose: cheap ones of poor quality tend to break down frequently, while good ones are more durable but come at a higher price. It’s like choosing between buying cheap fertilizers, pesticides, and vegetables at a market, or purchasing individually packaged, eco-friendly vegetables at a supermarket – the quality differs and so does the price; it’s up to you to decide what you prefer and choose accordingly.

Submersible pumps (pumps whose motor is also underwater are included in this category; as for those where the motor is submerged as well, they’re not suitable for use, as the frequent damage to the motor can be extremely troublesome). Their advantage lies in their ease of movement and installation, but their efficiency is lower, and their head pressure is also less than that of horizontal pumps; they are mainly used for pumping water out of pits. It seems that the failure rate is extremely high; if there are many units in use over a long period of time, the maintenance costs will be very high as well. For long-term use in sewage treatment plants, it is recommended to use corrosion- and wear-resistant mortar pumps; it is not necessary to opt for self-priming pumps, and a vacuum water tank can be made locally at the inlet. I have used the Zeus UHB-ZK series mortar pumps in the ash sedimentation circulating water systems of boiler rooms and gas stations (their efficiency is slightly lower than that of ordinary horizontal pumps), and they are truly excellent – no lubricating oil is needed except for the motor! The boiler room has a high level of sludge, which can easily clog the inlet; therefore, a hose is used as the inlet. When it gets clogged, the pump can be reversed, and it’s easy to remove it for cleaning (we can use this pump without any problems for cleaning the tanks as well).
