The moving ring is installed on the shaft sleeve, with its end face facing upward as the shaft sleeve is positioned. Measure the distance a from the top end face of the shaft sleeve to the end face of the rotating ring; measure the distance b from the top of the shaft sleeve to the bottom step inside the shaft sleeve. The value of c, which represents the size of the rotating ring before compression, is obtained by adding a and b together. The stationary ring is installed within the sealing gland, and the distance d from the sealing surface of the gland gasket to the end face of the stationary ring is measured. In the diagram, the stationary ring is lower than the sealing surface of the gland gasket; therefore, the value e, representing the size of the seal before compression, is obtained by subtracting d from c. (Note that if the stationary ring is higher than the sealing surface of the gland gasket, then e is obtained by adding d to c.) The bearing housing and coupling are placed with the lower side facing down, while the pump shaft is placed with the upper side facing up. A vernier caliper is placed horizontally on the suspension, close to the pump shaft, and the distance f from the shoulder of the sealing shaft sleeve on the pump shaft to the caliper is measured. Additionally, the distance g from the sealing surface of the gland on the pump’s upper cover to the junction between the upper cover and the suspension is measured. The value h, representing the size of the mechanical seal after it has been compressed, is obtained by adding f and g together. Therefore, by subtracting the size h after seal compression from the size e before compression, the compression amount of the mechanical seal is obtained. This method is applicable to the measurement of the compression amount of the single-face mechanical seal in cantilever centrifugal pumps, as well as that of the primary seal (sealing medium) in double-face mechanical seals for cantilever centrifugal pumps.
